Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Alexandra Lyon Perelman moved to New York City to study journalism at New York University. Before graduating, she raised funds to travel to war-torn Bosnia to create a news documentary on education. Soon after, she spent two years working as a Teach For America corps member, teaching and mentoring in Newark, New Jersey. She continued her own education at Columbia University and taught English at Baruch College Campus High School.
Alexandra first became involved with Women for Women International after attending a fundraiser in New York City. Inspired by Zainab Salbi’s mission of helping women rebuild the lives of their families and communities from the horrors of conflict, she sponsored a sister in Rwanda. While sponsoring her first sister, she and Elena thought bottling and selling GIVESCENT would be a wonderful way to support Women for Women International and help women worldwide. After creating a few bottles of Elena’s Italian-inspired blend in her NYC apartment, more and more people asked her for bottles of the special scent.
When Alexandra is not teaching, she can be found practicing yoga, reading her favorite authors, Edith Wharton and Zora Neale Hurston, traveling with her husband and two sons, and wearing GIVESCENT.
